How Reliable Are GMC Vehicles?
Ask how reliable GMC vehicles are and you’ll get a ranking. Ask where the ranking came from and the answer usually thins out fast.
There is a published measure, it carries a name and a year, and we’ll print it here. What matters more is what it counts, what it leaves out, and how to read it against the specific Buick or GMC you’re actually considering.
Keep reading below, then schedule a test drive near Katy. Bringing your own numbers to the lot settles this faster than any spec sheet.
GMC scores 228 problems per 100 vehicles in the 2026 study
The scale counts problems that owners report, so a lower number means fewer of them. The industry average in the same study is 204 problems per 100 vehicles (J.D. Power, 2026). Both figures come out of one survey, one year, and one three-year ownership window, which is the only reason they can sit next to each other at all.
Here is what that study published for the two brands we sell.
| Brand or benchmark | 2026 dependability score | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Buick | 160 problems per 100 vehicles | J.D. Power 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study |
| Industry average | 204 problems per 100 vehicles | J.D. Power 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study |
| GMC | 228 problems per 100 vehicles | J.D. Power 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study |
Those are the numbers. We are not going to dress them up, and we are not going to rank the brands we sell against a list nobody sourced.
What a problems-per-100 score counts, and what it leaves out
It counts complaints of every size, from a rattling trim panel to a transmission. The 2026 study spans 184 specific problem areas across nine categories, including infotainment, climate, seats, powertrain, and driving assistance (J.D. Power, 2026). A screen that pairs slowly and a failed component both land in the same total.
That is why a single brand number moves so much and explains so little. Four words do most of the work here.
| Term | What it means | Why it matters to you |
|---|---|---|
| PP100 | Problems reported per 100 vehicles over 12 months | A count of complaints, weighted the same whatever the size |
| VDS | J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study | Measures three-year-old vehicles, done annually |
| Three-year window | The study surveys original owners after three years | It reports on the past, and says nothing about year four |
| Design complaint | A feature that works as built but annoys the owner | Counted alongside a genuine defect in the same total |
The 2026 study surveyed owners of 2023 model-year vehicles
Its sample is 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles, asked after three years of ownership (J.D. Power, 2026). Every figure it publishes describes trucks and SUVs built three years ago.
That gap matters when you’re standing in front of something new. If a nameplate was redesigned since 2023, the score belongs to the version that came before the redesign. Same badge on the tailgate, different engine, different transmission calibration, different screens, different supplier list.
So the score is a real measure of a real population of vehicles. It just isn’t a measure of the one you’re about to sign for.
Buick ranks highest among mass-market brands at 160
It repeats, too: that’s the second consecutive year Buick has finished highest of the mass market brands in the study (J.D. Power, 2026). One year is a result, and two in a row is a pattern worth acting on.
If dependability sits at the top of your list, that is where we’d point you first. Buick builds SUVs only, and the current lineup is four of them: the Envista, the Encore GX, the Envision, and the Enclave. They cover a compact crossover through a three-row family SUV, which reaches most of what a northwest Houston household is shopping for.
It is a real recommendation with a real limit. If you tow a boat to Lake Conroe or haul a gooseneck to a jobsite, no Buick in the lineup is built for that, and the conversation moves back to a Sierra or a Canyon.
Check the powertrain coverage on the vehicle in front of you
Coverage runs from the day a vehicle was first put in service, so the useful question is always how much term is left on this one. Buick publishes powertrain coverage of 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, on the engine, transmission, and drive systems (Buick, 2026).
Coverage follows the vehicle. A second owner picks up whatever remains of the original term, which is why a two-year-old truck with 18,000 miles is a very different purchase from a five-year-old one with 90,000, whatever the brand score says about either.
Bring us the VIN, or send it over before you drive out. We’ll pull the remaining factory coverage on that exact vehicle and tell you what date and what mileage each layer ends on.
Ask which generation the GMC in front of you belongs to
A redesign changes the vehicle underneath the badge. New powertrain options, a new transmission, a new electrical architecture, and a new infotainment system can all arrive in one model year, and two trucks with the same nameplate on the tailgate can share almost nothing that breaks.
This is where a list of years to avoid falls apart. Ranking model years treats a nameplate as one long continuous vehicle. Buyers who get this right ask three questions instead.
- Which generation is this? Find the redesign date for the nameplate and see which side of it your candidate sits on.
- What changed at the break? Engine, transmission, and electronics are the three that matter most for long-term cost.
- Does the published score cover this generation? If the vehicle was redesigned after the study’s model year, it does not.
We can answer all three on any Sierra, Canyon, Yukon, Acadia, or Terrain on our lot, because those two brands are the only ones our people sell and service.
Four checks that beat a brand score on a used GMC
Records beat rankings on a specific vehicle, every time. A brand average is built from thousands of trucks you will never own; the service history in front of you is built from the one you might.
- Service history. Documented oil changes and transmission service on a Cypress vehicle tell you more about the next 50,000 miles than any score.
- Remaining factory coverage. Ask for the in-service date and the mileage each layer expires at.
- A multi-point inspection. A lift, a light, and a technician who works on this brand daily will find what the paperwork misses.
- Certification status. GM’s CarBravo certification adds a 12-month or 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty with no deductible on vehicles under 10 model years and 100,000 miles (CarBravo, 2026).
Where you land depends on what you’re buying.
| Your situation | What to weigh first | What to ask us for |
|---|---|---|
| Buying new | Generation and current factory coverage | The in-service date and full coverage terms |
| Buying certified pre-owned | The certification tier and what it adds | Written warranty terms and the inspection sheet |
| Buying used out of warranty | Documented service history and inspection results | A multi-point inspection report before you offer |
| Keeping the GMC you own | Whether Houston driving puts you on the severe schedule | Your service records and the next interval due |
Where we sit among Houston’s Buick and GMC stores
Verifying dependability on a specific vehicle takes a service drive that works on these two brands every day and keeps the history in the building. Here is how the Buick and GMC franchised stores a Katy buyer would realistically drive to compare on brands served, owner review volume, and location.
| Dealer | Brands sold and serviced | Google reviews | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group 1 Buick GMC North | Buick and GMC only | 7,792 | FM 1960 at Jones Road, northwest Houston |
| Wiesner Buick GMC | Buick and GMC only | 1,391 | I-45 North in Conroe |
| Big Star Buick GMC | Buick and GMC only | 2,505 | East Freeway in Baytown |
Trucks and SUVs do not score the same
A brand number averages vehicles built on different platforms for different jobs, so the segment result is the more useful read, and the 2026 study is explicit about where each GM nameplate landed.
- Full-size pickups. The Silverado and the Sierra led the large light-duty pickup segment in the 2025 study. In 2026 they sit below the top of that category, which is a change in one model year of owners rather than a change in the truck.
- Large SUVs. Inside GM’s own pair, the Tahoe ranked above the Yukon in the 2026 segment awards, on a shared platform and a shared powertrain range.
- Midsize SUVs. The Acadia was the highest-ranked model in its segment in the 2025 study, which is the strongest recent placing any GMC holds.
Read those together and the pattern is that a segment placing moves year to year while a brand average moves slowly. That is an argument for checking the specific model year and generation in front of you rather than buying or avoiding a badge.
The Buick side of the showroom is the sharper contrast, and it sits in the same study rather than a friendlier one: Buick ranked highest among mass-market brands for a second consecutive year at 160 problems per 100 vehicles, against an industry average of 204.
Frequently asked questions
Does J.D. Power test the vehicles or survey the owners?
It surveys owners. The Vehicle Dependability Study asks original owners what has gone wrong over the previous 12 months, then converts the answers into problems per 100 vehicles. Nobody drives the cars on a track for this one.
Should I avoid a particular GMC model year?
We don’t publish a year to avoid, because a model year is a weak proxy for what actually differs between two trucks. Identify the generation, find out what changed at the redesign, and check the service record on the specific vehicle. That gets you a real answer about a real truck.
Does the powertrain warranty stay with the vehicle if I buy it used?
Factory coverage runs from the date the vehicle was first put in service, so a later owner picks up whatever term is left. Send us the VIN and we’ll pull the remaining coverage before you make an offer, including the end date and end mileage for each layer.
What does a certified used GMC come with if something breaks?
GM’s CarBravo certification adds a 12-month or 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty with no deductible on vehicles under 10 model years and 100,000 miles (CarBravo, 2026). Older, higher-mileage certified vehicles fall under a shorter powertrain term, so confirm which tier applies to the one you’re looking at.
Where else can I check reliability besides J.D. Power?
Consumer Reports builds its ratings from more than 50 objective tests at its own test center plus annual owner surveys covering over 380,000 vehicles (Consumer Reports, 2026). Reading two independent sources gives you a better picture than leaning on one.
Does Houston heat change how often my GMC needs service?
For a lot of owners here, yes. Long idle hours in FM 1960 traffic, sustained heat, and towing all push a vehicle onto the severe-use maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual, which shortens the interval between oil changes. Ask us to check which schedule your driving actually fits.
How many miles will a GMC Sierra last?
No manufacturer publishes a lifespan figure, and anyone quoting one is guessing. What you can verify is the remaining factory coverage and the maintenance record, and those two documents predict the next five years far better than a round number does.
Read the figure, then read the vehicle
The question people type is about a brand. The purchase is always about one vehicle, with one in-service date, one service history, and one generation of engineering under it. J.D. Power’s 2026 study gives you a sourced starting point, Buick’s result gives you a clear route if dependability leads your list, and the VIN gives you the rest.
We published the number without ranking it, because it is a figure, and a verdict on the truck in your driveway has to come from that truck’s own record.
How Group 1 Buick GMC North reads the record on one specific vehicle
A brand score can’t tell you what the Sierra or Envision in front of you has been through, so we work from the VIN instead: in-service date, remaining factory coverage, service history, and a multi-point inspection you can read yourself. Buyers rate us 4.4 stars across 7,792 Google reviews, the highest review volume of any Buick or GMC dealership in the Jersey Village area, and what customers describe most often is being shown the evidence and left to decide.
In an August 2026 Cars.com review, Linda L. wrote: “I especially like the way that the issues were reviewed with me via video and was given the option of having the service completed or rejecting it without the constant pressure or looking over my shoulder. I appreciate the honesty of the service consultant and from the dealership. I truly felt like a customer rather than just a number!” A July 2026 Carfax reviewer put the turnaround plainly: “They were able to diagnose, get approval from my warranty company, and repair my vehicle all in one day.”
The same approach runs on the sales side. In a July 2026 Cars.com review, a buyer wrote that “Lee was an excellent representative of Buick Group 1 very transparent, thorough, knowledgeable and extremely kind.” Value your trade and get pre-approved online, then come to FM 1960 and we’ll have the coverage and history ready on whatever you came to see.
Group 1 Buick GMC North is where a published brand score turns into the documented record on one VIN. Send us the vehicle you’re considering, or start with a trade value and a pre-approval, and we’ll have the coverage details and service history waiting when you arrive.
Group 1 Buick GMC North answers this question against the specific vehicle in front of you rather than the model in general. Value your trade and get pre-approved online, then see us at our Houston showroom, or call (281) 897-6690.
