GMC Sierra AT4X or AT4, What the $12,600 Step Buys

Park an AT4 next to an AT4X and the second truck costs $12,600 more. From 10 feet away, that gap reads like a badge and a wheel choice. The Sierra line topped 348,000 units in the US last year, up about 8% year over year (GM Authority, 2025), and these two trims sit near the top of that ladder.

The step buys parts you can name and point at. Here is each one, what it changes on wet ground, and what moves the other way on fuel economy, payload, and price.

Keep reading below, then schedule a test drive near Katy. Bringing your own numbers to the lot settles this faster than any spec sheet.

The AT4 and AT4X bracket the top of the Sierra ladder

The AT4 starts at $67,000 and the AT4X at $79,600 (GMC, 2026). Both are off-road Sierra 1500 trims, so the money does not move you into a different truck. It moves you one rung up on hardware inside the same half-ton. Seeing where that rung sits against the rest of the range makes the number easier to judge.

Trim Starting MSRP Difference from the AT4
Sierra 1500 SLT $55,100 $11,900 below the AT4
Sierra 1500 Denali $66,100 $900 below the AT4
Sierra 1500 AT4 $67,000 the reference point here
Sierra 1500 AT4X $79,600 $12,600 above the AT4
Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate $84,400 $17,400 above the AT4

Starting MSRP excludes freight, tax, title, license, and dealer fees. The Denali sits $900 under the AT4, which tells you something useful on its own: GMC does not price these trims as a straight climb from ordinary to fancy. They point at different jobs.

What the AT4 already covers at $67,000

The AT4 leaves the factory with off-road-tuned suspension and skid plates, so it is built to leave pavement before you add anything. GMC publishes 420 hp as the maximum available on a Crew Cab 4WD AT4, with seating for up to five (GMC, 2026).

For a graded gravel road, a soft launch ramp, and a pasture track two days after a storm, that is the job. Most Sierra owners in Cypress and Tomball never ask a truck for more than that. The AT4 is the answer to the question most of them are actually asking.

The AT4X step buys dampers and locking differentials

The AT4X adds Multimatic DSSV dampers plus front and rear electronic-locking differentials, and that hardware is where the $12,600 goes. Lockers earn their money in one moment: a wheel lifts or spins, and with the axle locked, both wheels keep turning. Dampers work every time the truck lands after a rut.

Term What it means
Multimatic DSSV damper The damper GMC fits to the AT4X. Dampers control how the suspension settles after a hit.
Electronic-locking differential A differential you lock from a switch so both wheels on that axle turn together.
Skid plate A plate under the truck that shields the hardware underneath from rocks and ruts.
Max available GMC’s figure for the highest-rated build of a trim. Your truck can be rated lower.

Cabin content climbs alongside the hardware. GMC sets the standard list by trim and by package, and an available item is not a standard one, so the window sticker on the exact truck is the only complete list. We will read it line by line with you.

What does the AEV Edition add on top of an AT4X?

An AEV off-road package is available above the AT4X, built with American Expedition Vehicles. It is a package, so its contents belong to the individual truck and the model year, and the sticker settles what came with it.

If your driving takes you far from a paved road on a regular basis, this is the step worth asking about by VIN. If it does not, the AT4X hardware already covers a lot of ground.

Run the AT4X fuel numbers against your own week

The EPA certifies the 4WD Sierra 1500 AT4X at 14 city, 16 highway, and 15 combined mpg on one build, and at 19 city, 20 highway, and 19 combined on another (EPA, 2026). Off-road tires, gearing, and weight all land in that figure, and they land in it again every week you fill the tank.

The EPA’s other 4WD Sierra 1500 ratings run from 16 to 24 combined, depending on the engine. Which rating applies to the truck in front of you follows its engine and equipment, so check the sticker rather than the trim name. Then multiply by the miles you drive in a normal month. If you run 1,500 miles a month up and down 249 and the Beltway, a few combined mpg is a real line in your budget. If you run 500, it is a smaller one.

Payload and towing follow the build you order

Neither badge sets your payload or your tow rating. GMC publishes maximum payload by cab and bed. A Crew Cab short bed Sierra 1500 is rated up to 2,020 lbs. and a Regular Cab standard bed up to 2,230 lbs. (GMC, 2026). Those are maximums for the lightest build of that configuration.

Four things to confirm on the individual truck:

  • Payload on the door jamb. The yellow sticker inside the driver’s door carries the number for that VIN, and it is the one that counts when you load the bed.
  • The tow rating for that exact build. Engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, and axle ratio all move it. Two trucks on the same row of the lot can be rated differently.
  • Standard equipment and package equipment. Ask which off-road parts came with the trim and which arrived in a package, because the sticker separates them and a brochure does not.
  • The warranty clock. Every new Sierra 1500 carries 3 years or 36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage and 5 years or 60,000 miles of powertrain coverage (GMC, 2026). That is the same on an AT4 and an AT4X.

Match the trim to the ground you cover most weekends

Northwest Houston asks a half-ton for wet ground far more often than it asks for a locked front axle. Cypress averages more than 4 feet of rain a year (National Weather Service, 2025), which keeps caliche, pasture, and unpaved launches soft for days at a time. Soft is a different problem from a climb where a tire leaves the ground.

What your weekends look like The trim that fits Why
Pavement, a Lake Conroe ramp, a trailer behind you Sierra 1500 AT4 Off-road-tuned suspension and skid plates handle loose and wet surfaces
Gravel county roads, pasture gates, a soft two-track Sierra 1500 AT4 Traction loss on this ground is brief and shallow
Deep ruts and climbs where one wheel leaves the ground Sierra 1500 AT4X Front and rear electronic-locking differentials keep both wheels on an axle turning
Remote trail use, well away from paved roads Sierra 1500 AT4X with the AEV Edition The AEV package adds equipment built for trail work

Write down the worst surface you crossed in the last six months. That surface, and not the one in the brochure photo, is what should pick your trim.

Where Group 1 Buick GMC North sits among Houston Buick and GMC stores

A Sierra AT4X is a low-volume configuration, so the store you buy from decides how often you get to stand next to one. Every Buick and GMC franchise dealership in the Katy area is here, compared on location, how many Google reviews it has earned, and who it fits best.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add the AT4X hardware to an AT4 later?

The Multimatic dampers and the front and rear locking differentials are factory equipment on the AT4X, so adding them afterward means aftermarket parts and an aftermarket install. Talk to our service department before you plan a build, because modifications can affect how a warranty claim is handled.

Does the AT4X tow more than the AT4?

Towing follows the engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, and axle ratio on the specific truck, so the badge does not settle it. Ask for the tow rating on the VIN you are considering and match it against your loaded trailer weight, including tongue weight.

Does GMC build an AT4X version of the Sierra HD?

Yes. GMC offers an AT4X on the Sierra HD as well, which is a heavier truck aimed at gooseneck and fifth-wheel work, so a buyer choosing between half-ton off-road trims is in a different conversation than a buyer shopping HD.

Will the AT4X feel rough on the freeway around Houston?

Hardware tuned for off pavement changes how any truck rides on concrete. Drive an AT4 and an AT4X back to back on a stretch of 290 or 249 you already use every week, and judge it on your own road instead of on a spec sheet.

Are the AT4 and AT4X both four-wheel drive?

Both are built and rated as four-wheel-drive trucks. GMC publishes the AT4’s horsepower and seating figures for Crew Cab 4WD, and the EPA certifies the AT4X as a 4WD build.

What if the AT4X I want is not on the lot?

You have three routes: a dealer trade for a truck that already exists, a wider locate search, or a factory order built to your specification. Tell us which pieces of equipment are non-negotiable, because that decides which route is realistic.

Do the AT4 and AT4X take the same maintenance schedule?

Your owner’s manual lists a normal schedule and a severe one, and the truck’s use decides which applies. Towing, heat, idling, and short trips move plenty of Jersey Village trucks onto the shorter intervals, whichever trim they wear.

Where the $12,600 actually goes

From 10 feet away, the AT4X is a badge. Underneath, it is a set of dampers, two locking differentials, and the option of an AEV package on top, and each of those parts is either working or riding along depending on where you drive on Saturday. If your weekends end on gravel and wet ramps, the AT4 already carries the hardware for it. If they end where a wheel lifts and a locked axle decides whether you move, the AT4X is the truck, and $12,600 is what that hardware costs.

The part no price list can show you is which of those parts is on the truck parked on the lot.

How Group 1 Buick GMC North reads an AT4 or AT4X window sticker with you

The difference between these two trims is a list of parts, and the only way to know which parts are on a specific truck is to stand beside it with the sticker in hand. That is what we do on FM 1960 every day, and buyers rate us 4.4 stars across 7,792 Google reviews, alongside 4.4 stars across 1,474 DealerRater reviews. What they name most often is the conversation before the paperwork.

In a May 2026 DealerRater review, a customer wrote: “This was the best car shopping experience we’ve had. Lee was an excellent representative of Buick Group 1 very transparent, thorough, knowledgeable and extremely kind. We enjoyed doing business with him.”

The truck also comes back to us for the life of it. In a July 2026 Carfax review, an owner wrote: “They were able to diagnose, get approval from my warranty company, and repair my vehicle all in one day.” In an August 2026 Cars.com review, Linda L. wrote: “I received excellent service by Ron, my assigned service consultant. He listened to the issues I was having with my vehicle and provided me with some scenarios about the possible issues and laid out a timeline of when I could expect my car to be looked at and when the timing of the repairs. Throughout the entire experience, Ron kept in touch with me and provided updates on my vehicle. I especially like the way that the issues were reviewed with me via video and was given the option of having the service completed or rejecting it without the constant pressure or looking over my shoulder. I appreciate the honesty of the service consultant and from the dealership. I truly felt like a customer rather than just a number!”
